Is FIFA running short on money?

According to its 2025 annual report, FIFA’s assets as of WED 31 DEC 2025 totalled about US$6,750,000,000, including about US$2,700,000,000 of reserves. Furthermore, the 2026 Men’s World Cup is expected to bring in another US$15,000,000,000. Surely that should be more than enough for everything that FIFA does, right?

Not if current FIFA president Gianni Infantino is to be believed. He recently developed a proposal to sell equity in FIFA’s assets, including the Men’s and Women’s World Cups, to private equity firms for as much as US$20,000,000,000. This plan was developed without the involvement of FIFA’s members and confederations, all whilst keeping most of the rest of FIFA’s leadership in the dark. Luckily, one of Infantino’s closest friends is the current president of the United States, and he knows a guy.

So, does FIFA actually have enough money already? To answer this question, we must ask how much money is enough money. Our partners at Interaction addressed this same question recently. The results may fail to surprise you.
