WEEKLY WHINE

Scientific inquiry today

You probably aren't aware, but I've been assigned to do some research. It's fairly important, at least to me. I'll work on it over the next week, and the results will be made available here. You may be wondering what other research projects exist, so here's a brief rundown of some of the major ones, plus how you can be a part of them.

ProjectLocationObjective
Mars ExplorationJPL JPL is in the process of launching many, many probes toward Mars, like the Climate Orbiter, the Polar Lander, and the upcoming Mars 2001 probes. You can get involved by building a probe and launching it. Or, if you're lucky and/or extremely rich, you can encourage NASA to launch it on, say, a Delta vehicle.
Calculation of πEverywhere Everyone wants a piece of this action. SALES PITCH: If you want to be part of this thrilling research effort, just get Snakeπ, which combines the power of a π calculator with the excitement of SnakeBall. It's coming "soon"! Hurry, before they calculate another million digits!
Prime FindingEverywhere Mersenne primes are the most popular category. Several folks are offering big huge prizes for people who find these [hint - they're of the form 2N - 1], but most people wind up empty. If you care enough, you can download finders almost anywhere - just go to your favorite software site and look for prime numbers.
Observing Distant GalaxiesSpace Telescope Science Institute HST has already made two Deep Field observations, which contain lots and lots of faraway galaxies. The results indicate that there are a whole lot more galaxies than we thought there were, including some that aren't that far anyway. Regardless, they're all really dim. To be part of this effort, just stare at either Deep Field image until you see the 3D image.
Subplot DetectionCaltech Here at Caltech, we can find subplots deeply rooted in many popular films, and several unpopular films as well. You can spend months uncovering subplot after subplot in π, and some actually do. Findings include some rather unexpected themes in films like The Craft, which didn't have much else anyway, and A Clockwork Orange, which did. If you're at Caltech, just stop by Ricketts Hovse to play along.
Constitutional ResearchCongress Republicans always present theories of the Constitution with the invariable result that they're right and that the Democrats are wrong. Curiously, Democrats always present theories of the Constitution with the invariable result that they're right and that the Republicans are wrong. So, to be part of this rapidly growing field, send a message to your representatives in Congress, asking which theory is right, if either. When you get your rhetoric-saturated response, you'll be glad you did. Okay, you might not.
