WEEKLY WHINE
Munber theory comes into existence
Now that munber theory exists, the book will slowly increase in volume. You'll see more and more space on the ITS server devoted to munbers, you'll see many types of information on munbers, you'll see fan clubs for munbers, you'll see a few newsgroups on munbers, and you'll see more and more additions to the theory of munbers.
One thing that you probably won't see, though, is a long list of applications for munbers.
There might not be any, sure, but from where I stand, there's plenty of room for their use.
One suggestion has been to have them represent polynomials. This would be accomplished by letting their members be the roots of the polynomial, and then things like multiplication could be done rather easily.
The truth of the matter is that you have to create the actual system first, and then find ways to use it.
I'm perfectly happy with that, since I see what few others see: munbers are fun. They're pleasure, excitement, intrigue, and a share of romanticism. Think of it this way: How many times have you wanted something to be equal to more than one number simultaneously? For years, the mathematicians would tell you that it couldn't be done. Now, thanks to munbers, it can.
They bring together the flexibility of sets and the power of numbers. They're the union of form and function. They're more than meets the eye. They're more than just a bunch of numbers put together. Instead of just statistics, you can have power statistics, with addition and multiplication of the data points all at once. With the soon-to-be-released superequalities, we'll see exactly how you can use munbers for your own personal gain.
You can do your taxes in munbers, as Jamal has pointed out. You'll see courses in munbers. You'll see all that you thought was impossible. You could even see a hit single.
That's what munbers bring you.
If this confuses you completely, move to the official site of my work in progress, Simple Introduction to Munber Theory, and see the true story of one man's struggle with axioms, theorems, and the epic battle waged between equality and identicality.
