League cup sponsors exist
It is often said that football is a funny old game. One aspect of it that is funny, but not all that old, is the league cup.
Most countries that have football leagues also have cup competitions organised by the country’s national football association. But some countries also have additional cup competitions that are organised by the league. These competitions sometimes serve an important purpose – for example, in MLS, the league cup is the playoffs, which decide the champion.
But in most other countries, the league cup is nowhere near as important. Traditionally, English clubs do not give a fuck about the league cup unless they reach the semifinals. In Germany, the league cup was played as a preseason friendly tournament until it was discontinued entirely.
One must surely ask why league cups exist. The answer, as always, is money. This is yet another excuse to cram the fixture list with even more matches. They may pass it off as a rare opportunity to pit teams in different divisions against one another, but they can’t hide the truth.
The truth is made plain by the fact that many of these league cups are sponsored. But do you know by whom? Drag the entities below onto the countries whose league cups they sponsor. Then click the button to see how many you have correct, and repeat the process until you have all twelve correct.
