For far too long, police departments in the United States have been instructing their officers in the use of neck restraints, choke holds, and other dangerous and unnecessary tactics used on people who are already restrained by police officers.

For far too long, police departments in the United States have responded to peaceful demonstrations by the use of force. Officers typically arrive on the scene in full riot gear, and frequently they escalate to tear gas, flash grenades, and rubber bullets when the situation does not warrant it.

Both have been on evidence, all too plainly, in the United States recently. George Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis, MN, USA who kneeled on his neck for eight minutes and forty six seconds, in circumstances alarmingly similar to those in the killing of Eric Garner in New York City, NY, USA in 2014. The protests since then have been met with tear gas canisters fired directly at participants, pepper spray directly in the face, and rubber bullets that have blinded several participants.

We, the people of the United States of America, do not want the law upheld in this manner.

We, the people of the United States of America, know that nonlethal tactics and methods of deescalation have long been proven effective, but police departments are not making use of them.

We, the people of the United States of America, demand that police departments throughout the country receive full and adequate training in such methods.

We, the people of the United States of America, demand that police departments throughout the country treat all people with respect, including black Americans.
