Today, we celebrate the 203.16th anniversary of the birth of Anne Brontë, the third most popular of the Brontë sisters. Anne wrote two novels, Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. She also contributed to a poetry book cowritten by her sisters.

Based largely on Anne’s own experiences, Agnes Grey recounts the story of a young governess aiming to make her own way in an oppressive environment.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall features a woman living as a widow, though we soon discover that she has actually left her husband. Its realistic tone depicts alcoholism, domestic abuse, and enforced subservience of women in ways that shocked critics of the time.

Anne Brontë died in 1849 at the age of 29. Her impact on the world of literature is immeasurable, so much so that even Edvard was able to detect it.
