WEEKLY WHINE
Debrief of the day
YULIYADAY: SUN 14:00-MON 11:00 PST
Named for Yuliya Ruvinskaya, this day may have been the best overall. Its alignment was closest to the typical days, and it allowed a convenient evening time for both work and play. Some events conflicted with the early hours, though there is really no need for such events to occur at these times. Perhaps the largest advantage of this day was that, due to its position, it became the source for Yuliyaday Night Cookies.

CARLOSDAY: MON 11:00-TUE 08:00 PST
This day, bearing the name of Carlos Alejandro Romero Talamás, also had a good record for convenience, with the exception of its early end. Nonetheless, it provided sufficient time to prepare for the following day's activities, as well as an appropriate starting time. It was the easiest to maintain, placed well according to the requirements. It often felt like a busy day, that most likely because it was the equivalent of Monday.

KEVDAY: TUE 08:00-WED 05:00 PST
Taking the name of Kevin Lewis Parkin, this day was where the week turned around. Action started only an hour into this day and occupied much time almost continously into the afternoon. The latter parts of the day, therefore, were considerably more sluggish and did not often add great contributions. Another problem was the requirement of a broken sleep period here, a factor that helped make the intervening period empty. Standby mode lasted more than seven hours on many occasions.
Maintenance: 4; Convenience: 4; Enjoyment: 4; Total: 12
CHRISDAY: WED 05:00-THU 02:00 PST
This day's name honours Chris M Hirata, but the day was unfortunate to fall short of its name. It was without doubt the roughest day, responsible for the only failure of this schedule. Furthermore, the requirement matrix forced part of this day's sleep period into Ayehday [see below]. Evening times were a pleasant part of this day, but ultimately its lasting legacy will be one of too many requirements and too little time.
Maintenance: 2; Convenience: 3; Enjoyment: 4; Total: 9
AYEHDAY: THU 02:00-23:00 PST
This day was named for Ayeh Bandeh-Ahmadi, fittingly marked by starting and ending with sleep periods. But in between, very little happened on the whole. It did not afford consistent opportunities to make positive contributions, most likely because more than half of it, due to requirements, was spent in standby mode. This helped contribute to a number of missed opportunities, which, though not considered failures, are still troubling. This day left much to be desired.
Maintenance: 4; Convenience: 2; Enjoyment: 3; Total: 9
CHALDAY: THU 23:00-FRI 20:00 PST
A day that took its name from Chalita Thanyakoop might be predicted to be eccentric, and it surely met those expectations. This day's greatest success was its position for doughnuts, enjoyed on a weekly basis for the first time since Ay102. It also converted a morning class into an evening class, and the long empty time at its start sometimes led to important breakthroughs. But at other times it was subject to the same problem faced by Kevday and by Ayehday, that of making empty time into useful time.
Maintenance: 5; Convenience: 6; Enjoyment: 6; Total: 17
MELISSADAY: FRI 20:00-SAT 17:00 PST
It was only natural that Melissa Todd, inspiration of this madness, receive the commendation of a day. The forecasted "Extraday" did in fact materialise, in this location. Alanday through Chalday were identified with Saturday through Friday, and so this day was considered the extra one. Again, a number of events prompted permutations of this day, and there was usually work to be done. On the whole, its standing at the start of the weekend ensured that it was always an enjoyable day.
Maintenance: 4; Convenience: 5; Enjoyment: 7; Total: 16
ALANDAY: SAT 17:00-SUN 14:00 PST
This day bore with pride the name of Alan Pritchard, but it also fell victim to adjustments and tedium. It is undoubtedly the best time to party, which is a bit of a disappointment as very little of that was actually accomplished. One challenge with this day, though a welcome one, was the choice of when to eat. Like its weekend neighbours, it had no well defined times for this purpose. It was the second of three days of the weekend, a factor that will surely be recognised as the best feature of this schedule.
Maintenance: 5; Convenience: 5; Enjoyment: 7; Total: 17
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
- There seems to be no detriment to shortening the day compared with lengthening it.
- Efficiency was negatively impacted: several projects witnessed drops in performance.
- As predicted, the days with greatest phase shift were forced to vary most.
- Empty periods at night were surprisingly difficult to utilise, often wasted on futile pursuits.
- The practise of three or more day weekends is pleasant and should be continued where possible.
- This schedule would be considerably easier when it is accompanied by greater flexibility in food.
- The most important unresolved issue is how to be useful between the hours of 02:00 and 08:00 local. A plan for utilising these hours should be developed before using any permuted schedule.
