Here are the results of the first GoobNet MLS Historical Cup, determining the best squad in league history. Some of the league’s best managers hosted this tournament, and we extend our deepest thanks to them for helping make it what it was. The hosts for the regional semifinals and finals were Bob Bradley, Frank Yallop, Dominic Kinnear, and Sigi Schmid. The final two rounds were hosted by Bruce Arena.
On the whole, this was an unbelieveably successful tournament, featuring many upsets once we got to the later rounds. Teams were seeded based upon their accomplishments during that season, with the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup counting the most. The four teams that reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions League/Cup – champions DC in 1998 and Los Angeles in 2000, and losing finalists LA in 1997 and Real Salt Lake in 2011 – were rewarded accordingly.
The highest seeds were the six Supporters Shield and MLS Cup double winning squads [DC in 1997 and 1999, LA in 2002 and 2011, KC in 2000, and Columbus in 2008], the 1998 DC United squad that won the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Interamerican Cup along with reaching the MLS Cup final, and the 2003 Chicago Fire squad that won the Shield and US Open Cup and that reached the MLS Cup final [to date the only squad to accomplish that combination].
So, we now congratulate the champions, last year’s Los Angeles Galaxy squad, and we thank all the participating teams and hosts, along with each of the volunteers who helped make this tournament the immense thrill that it was.
