WEEKLY WHINE
Here are the results of the first GoobNet British Game Show Championship, determining the British game show that best captures the British ideals of testing knowledge and acting in a condescending manner toward those whose knowledge is lacking. We of course thank some of the top hosts in British television for hosting this tournament. The hosts for the regional semifinals and finals were Magnús Magnússon, Bamber Gascoigne, Richard Whiteley, and Chris Tarrant. The final two rounds were hosted by Bruce Forsyth.
We ended up with a fantastic tournament, though there was a bit of controversy at the start over the qualifying process, owing to the fact that only shows that made the top 100 on UKGameshows were eligible. Thus, recent successes like Only Connect and The Cube have not yet made the list, but we look forward to seeing them in future tournaments.
You may also note that there were very few upsets: the higher seed won nearly every encounter. Instead of viewing this as a fault, we prefer instead to congratulate the seeding committee for reserving the highest seeds for the truly strong British game shows. [Though I must fault them for failing to award Numberwang a place in the tournament. Perhaps if we rotated the board....]
So, all that remains is for me to congratulate our winner, Mastermind, for its nearly forty years of fast paced, unrelenting quizzing. Finally, we must also thank all of the shows who participated and everyone who gave of themselves to make this a phenomenal event. Speaking as a lifelong game show fan, it was a particular thrill to witness the superior challenges that took place in every round. Do join us the next time we crown a top game show of the United Kingdom.
