2015 GoobNet Nunavut Island Championship

Here are the results of the first GoobNet Nunavut Island Championship, determining the best island in Nunavut. Now that the tournament has completed successfully, let us thank the hosts, selected from amongst the many and important waterways in Nunavut. The regional semifinals and finals were hosted by Foxe Basin, Baffin Bay, the Gulf of Boothia, and Parry Channel. The final two rounds were hosted by Hudson Bay.

A very entertaining tournament was had by all. In addition, we learned quite a bit about all 64 of the islands that qualified. For example, we did not realise that the fourth seed in the Foxe Basin regional, Prince Charles Island, was actually named after the current Prince Charles, as it was rediscovered in the prince’s birth year of 1948.

We were surprised both by the upsets that did occur and by those that did not. For instance, very few of us expected Little Cornwallis Island to knock Prince of Wales Island out in the first round. On the other hand, we believed that Beechey Island and its history as the final resting place of several of John Franklin’s 1845 expedition would overcome Victoria Island and perhaps make a deep run in the tournament, but it was not to be.

In the end, though, the world’s largest island that does not have any permanent residents was the winner. We extend our congratulations to Devon Island, and we thank all of the participating islands, all of the bodies of water that hosted, and all of the volunteers who put in so much time and effort to make this tournament the success that it was. And, of course, we wish a very happy sixteenth birthday to the territory of Nunavut.
