Youngsters spend hours on the playgrounds dreaming of having their favourite clubs retire their own numbers.

But these honours come with consequences. Many leagues, particularly the National Football League, have many teams that are running out of numbers. The situation has become so dire that wide receivers are now permitted to wear single digit numbers during preseason games. Where will it end?
