2016 GoobNet Name Championship: Results

Here are the results of the first GoobNet Name Championship, determining the best female name. We had ourselves a wonderful tournament, thanks in no small part to the fabulous effort put forth by our hosts. The hosts were selected from amongst the most well known settings in literary history. The regional semifinals and finals were hosted by St Mary Mead, Tara, River Heights, and Wuthering Heights. The final two rounds were held at Mansfield Park.

The tournament, of course, was packed with dramatic moments. We will all remember where we were when sixteenth seeded Eva shocked Isabella in the opening match of the Maycomb Sectional. And that was merely the start: all four first round matches in the Maycomb Sectional were won by the lower seed. Fifteenth seeded Sarah defeated Victoria in double overtime in the Mizora Sectional, leading to one of three matches in the tournament between double digit seeds.

But anyone who threw out the form book would have been punished. The Tara Regional saw the higher seed win all but one match. Many had expected good things out of sleeper picks Alexa and Scarlett, but both were cut down in the second round. Other highlights included the Wuthering Heights Regional semifinal between Emily and Zoe, so nearly a Deschanel sisters’ championship.

We arrived at Mansfield Park with a microcosm of the tournament: the remaining field was made up of two top seeds and two Cinderella stories. Maya carried such starpower as Rudolph and Angelou, but its captivating run finally came to an end against Mia. Amelia, however, narrowly defeated pretournament favourite Emma to set up a final for the ages. The two famous names battled back and forth, Pond answered by Wallace, Bloomer answered by Hamm. In the end, though, a late surge sent the title Amelia’s way.

So, it only remains for us to offer our heartfelt thanks to every name that participated, every host setting that opened its doors to us, and every volunteer that put on the green vest and invested their valuable time to help us make this tournament such a success. Congratulations to our new name champion, Amelia, are in order. There will be an enormous party at the Ponds’ tonight. We hope that Ms Earhart will find her way there.
