WEEKLY WHINE
Guide to 2016 US ballot measures
The United States votes on TUE 08 NOV 2016. If you live in the United States, you should vote on that day, or earlier if your locality supports such.
All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives are up for election, as are 34 seats in the US Senate, twelve state governors’ seats, nearly 6,000 seats in state legislatures, a huge array of local seats in all three branches of government, 156 state and federal district ballot measures, and innumerable local ballot measures.
So if you are a likely voter in a state or federal district, what sorts of ballot measures do you have to look forward to? As it turns out, the answer is most probably “bonds”, “minimum wage”, “more bonds”, “marijuana”, “something that will actually have the opposite effect of what its sponsors claim”, and “the NRA needlessly shoving hunting and fishing rights into state constitutions”.
So what should you do? Spend time researching the various ballot measures in your state, analyse the arguments for and against, look up where the money for each campaign is coming from, and then come to an informed decision? Yeah, right. That shit is totally for suckers. You should trust our snap judgments instead.
